This assists us in advancing our careers and moving into new positions where we can lead, manage, influence, coach and mentor others, and do so knowledgeably. (Would you want to be managed by someone who hadn’t learned anything new in years?)

CPD/INSET helps us to stay both interested and interesting. I would never want to get out of the interesting zone myself, as life and teaching would both become so humdrum. Experience is great in a teacher, but it can sometimes mean that we repeat what we have done before. Focused CPD opens us up to new possibilities, knowledge and skills. I have learned so much from my own colleagues and then seen the ripple effect of sharing these new skills with others. We have a built-in need as human beings to show off to others new things we have learned – it’s part of our ‘Oh, look what I can do’ DNA!

CPD/INSET can deliver a deeper understanding of what it means to be a professional – wanting to develop lifelong skills for our learners – along with a greater appreciation of the implications and impacts of our work.

CPD/INSET supports the advance of the body of knowledge and technology within our profession.

CPD/INSET can ignite the flame to try new ideas and activities in learning, and bring passion to lessons. We are all human, and the teacher who delivers outstanding lessons every day, every week, every month doesn’t exist. But the teacher who continually shows a willingness to embrace new ideas and strengthen their own arsenal with proven innovative teaching and learning techniques are the real winners in my eyes.
